Palin's church wants to "pray away the gay"
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s church is promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer.

“You’ll be encouraged by the power of God’s love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality,” said an insert in the bulletin of the Wasilla Bible Church, where Palin has prayed since she was a child.

-----------

Sounds like fun. I guess all gays worship the devil, right?

Of course, this is as revelant as Obama's connection to his old pastor. If you consider that important and feel the right to use it against him, it's open season on her.

She's a religious nut case. That's the reason she was selected by Dobson, Reed, and others. McBush pandering to a losing cause.

No, I just want irrelevant crap that doesn't have anything to do with the campaign to stop being posted.

That includes this, the whole pregnancy BS, Obama's racist preacher, etc, etc. None of those hold any water with the respecting candidates.

This issue is TOTALLY relevant to homosexuals who, if citizens, are able to vote in the United States.

If this makes Palin intolerant towards gays, then Obama's racist.

Also, it's possible to disagree with a gay person's lifestyle but still love him or her as a person (not that these people are doing that, specifically, as far as we know, but still).

Umm Wii maybe you should look at EVERY SINGLE CHRISTIAN CHURCH! Homosexuality is looked at as a major sin in all christian (the ones that follow the teachings of the new testament) religions.

There is no mention of homosexuals "Worshiping the devil" so way to put your own personal spin on it *yes* .

There is a difference in "attempting to convert homosexuals" and saying "gosh darn American, they got what they deserved with 9/11!"

Totally different and no where near as extreme and far fetched..

You do realize that the bible is completely against homosexuality? Hence why conservatives oppose any marital rights for gay marriages.... *surprise*

This is essentially what it boils down to. The vast majority of Christian churches view homosexuality as a sin.

When someone is "trapped" by their sins, the Christian thing to do would be to pray for them and try to help them overcome it, no matter what the sin may be. Of course, if the sin is also against the law (such as, I don't know, murder or something), punishment or reparations may be necessary.

The problem that happens all too often is people channel their hatred of the sin into hatred of the person committing the sin. The westboro baptist church is a good example of this with their "God hates ice cream mans" signs and rallies at the funerals of soldiers. Obviously, many gays will feel this is an attack against them, and the way the westboro baptist "people" do it, it most certainly is an attack.

But if it's done in the true spirit of Christianity, through honest prayer and compassion rather than hatred, it's not an attack against them, it's an attempt to help them lead normal lives instead of being afflicted with "the gay". Most gay people I know don't have a problem being gay, but have said that if they were given the choice, they would rather be heterosexual and not have to deal with all the persecution and hate that comes their way from being gay.

Do I think this "pray away the gay" thing will make much difference? Honestly, I would be surprised if it did, but I think its perfectly fine for a church to pray for the people they believe to be committing sin. In fact, I'd say it's a good thing that they're choosing this route of compassion and prayer rather than the route of hatred and fear. Replace "homosexuality" with any other sin, and nobody would bat an eye at this...

Try this one: “You’ll be encouraged by the power of God’s love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by drug addiction”

How about this: “You’ll be encouraged by the power of God’s love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by chronic gambling”

Or even: “You’ll be encouraged by the power of God’s love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by spousal abuse”

Christian churches do things like this all the fudging time. The only reason this particular incident is making any news at all is because it's touching a controversial subject and that it's related to Palin.

the fact is, intolerance towards gay people, lesbians, black people, white people etcetc. Intolerance towards fellow humans is unacceptable these days.

It's like the human race is de-evolving when, at the same time, it's evolving.

Obama isn't perfect, but he's a hell of a lot better than McCain and his running mate. It's time we as people grow the fudge up and start realizing we're all here right now, and we're going to have to deal with it. Hostility because somebody is different than you is pointless, so just give it up.

The Republican's whole platform is intolerance, fostered by the party bosses (Rove, et. al.) to motivate the base by transforming it into fear mongering - something the radical right is already predisposed to willing accept.

It's not intolerance, it's not accepting it as normal. As a Christian I believe that homosexuality is a sin, but I don't hate gay people. I don't support the Westboro Baptist Church or people who beat up random gays. At the same time I don't think that it's normal behavior or should be accepted in everyday society, even though they shouldn't be prohibited from living their lives the way they want. I think that it's commendable that the church says to pray for gays rather than hate them and want them to burn in hell.

The bible also says to pray in the privacy of your home, not force it onto other people, and not to judge people. I'd say thats three strikes on them right there already.

Do you have sex for pleasure or to strictly procreate? If you're having sex for pleasure you're doing the exact same thing a gay man/women is doing.

Sure, as animals, it makes no sense at all to fudge for any other reasons besides procreation, but we are just like our bonobo cousins in that we absolutely LOVE the pleasure acquired from fudging.
