College season just kicked off, NFL starts on Thursday. This is a completely necessary topic.
Who's everyone looking forward to this season.
I'm a Cowboys fan first, Seahawks fan second, and newly devoted Dolphins fan after their terrible season last year. I love Ronnie Brown, and I want them to dominate this year. Especially with Parcells as VP, hes going to get them into shape.
Lots of new rookies to watch out for this year. I think it should be a good season. Hopefully not dominated by Brady and his Patriots again. Fudge that. |

Dammit Nick, you stole my thread!
Anyway. im a Saints fan, and i also want the Dolphins to do well or atleast better this year. Im glad that the Pats lost some power, so going 18-0 again is a small chance of happening again. Saints have the best chance this year of getting into the playoffs as Carolina doesnt look to be enough even with Delhomme back and we all know Atlanta is going to have a losing record and probably be last in the NFC South, it's either Bucs again or the Saints who have a better shot this year like i stated before, if they atleast have >/=.500 win % and get into the playoffs i'll be happy this year |

With the prices this year, it wasn't that bad.. they only raised tickets another 5 bucks a game. Next year for the new stadium, they're charging an additional fee of like 2 grand. |

I think the Vikings will be good this year with added defense and a receivers. I think the Dolphins will be a lot better, they couldn't be much worse, prediction 6-10. Giants won't make playoffs, neither will Jets. No Strahan and no weird named guy=no defensive line for the Giants and the Jets just need work everywhere except QB. |

Yeah, $5 more is nothing compared to what New England-area fans are used to paying after championships...

I'm a huge Pats fan, but I think this year will be a tough one for them because of huge expectations... although they are probably going to be *better* on offense even if the numbers don't play out (e.g., another year working with Brady, Welker, Moss, etc., getting a healthy secondary back like Morris/Jordan back)... The one thing the Pats have in their favor is that they have shown that they don't go down easily and that they are built to handle almost any type of game... A team can't 'let up' on the Pats, e.g., even a 14-point half time lead isn't safe... and we know that the Pats won't 'let up' on their opponents (even if it draws complaints)... they have enough motivation now more than ever to never do that again.
The team I like the most from the AFC is the Colts (yes, surprise), but mostly because I still think their D is solid (a bit small, however) at causing turnovers and with Harrison back and even if he's at 70% of what he was, their O shouldn't look quite as clueless this year... They are kinda the 'forgotten' AFC team, if that is possible, considering I still don't know how they lost to the Chargers... Way too many UNFORCED mistakes in strong scoring chances, especially when they are coming from harrison and wayne/peyton.. and I'm saying this as a Pats fan. I think the Colts beat the Pats in Foxboro if they knock off the Chargers in that spot.
As for the NFC, I think it is fair to consider the Cowboys as the favorite. The Saints rebound a bit, but their division is tougher. Tampa and Seattle are solid. hard to predict how far Green Bay will drop off, if at all... I don't think it matters because I'd still pick the AFC team in the Super Bowl... |

well, if warner starts the whole season, zona could do decent...
as I noted, I won't count the Jags until they prove they can get past the Colts hump... even if they do that, they'd still run into teams like the Chargers and Pats who are still better than they are... |

I think the game against the Pats showed that they weren't 'lucky' to be where they were, but no one wins a SB without some bit of 'luck'... Then again, the best game they probably played all year was their *loss* against the Pats at the end of the season when they didn't have to do anything... The Pats were rather 'lucky' to beat them in that game... The Giants returned the favor in the SB... |

Typical. Do I think the Patriots were 'better' than the Rams in 2001? Of course not. But why should I expect a legit debate on such things? It is honestly like talking great football teams without including the Buffalo Bills run.
If you told me right now my favorite NFL team would be 18-0, up 4 points in the Super Bowl after a Brady to Moss TD with 2 minutes left, would you NOT take that situation EVERY TIME?? Seriously, go-youtube the game again... watch those final 4 minutes... How can you not love that as an NFL fan? Regardless of how it got to that point, EVERY NFL FAN would take that situation... It was the BEST thing for the NFL, even if it wasn't the best thing for the Patriots at the end of the day... Besides, as a Pats fan, if this was poker, that's like having pocket aces heads-up and having the guy next to you push all-in... You aren't going to win every time, but no one can honestly tell me they wouldn't take it... and if you told me that again for this year, I'd take it again too... everyone would.
Besides, as great as the Giants D played, I'm sure all those Giants defenders were thinking the same thing on the sideline seeing Eli scrambling, throwing wounded ducks up for grabs...... we just blew this game. Any Giants fan who honestly thought they were winning that game after that Moss TD is full of it. You know it and I know it. I won't call it luck because the strong play of the Giants allowed them to be in that position where they could make those plays... but don't for a second think that you'll ever see anything like that again...
That's why they call it an upset. The Patriots were (and still are) the better team. A shame they didn't win that one, but we all know if they did, you'd all have been throwing around Spy-Gate, and Cheaters and whatever other nonsense to justify why your favorite team didn't win...
---
As for this year, even as a Patriots fan I still think this is the Colts year. I honestly believe the Colts played like absolute crap against the Chargers (as noted above, way too many uncharacteristic mistakes... reminded me a lot of that Pats-Denver game from 2005... I give the Steelers a pass because they still had to get through that screw-job of a game @ INDY...). Perhaps that was the only reason the Pats even got *into* the Super Bowl..., e.g., I think it is fair to say the Pats were never really tested in the playoffs by the Chargers at full strength or even the Jaguars (who I've felt are still far overrated for what they are)... |
IlovePhysics
| | #30 posted September 4, 2008 at 11:29am (EST) |
I think that'll be the toughest part for a Patriot re-appearance in the Super Bowl... last year was a 'best-case' in terms of schedule and matchups in the playoffs... I still think the Pats get a first round bye, but I don't think they can expect to get a 'cake-walk' game against an 'injured' Chargers or to 'avoid' INDY. I still rank Indy, NE, and SD as all about even... I'd give the edge to NE and Indy, but NE's schedule is a lot tougher than I think it looks... The Jets, Miami, and Bills should all be improved... Division games are never quite as 'easy' regardless of team records... I also worry about Brady's injury. I think it should be clear that without Brady, the Pats O is lost... and with a hobbled Brady (e.g., Super Bowl), they are hardly as effective... |

I'm hoping the Jags can manage to finally pull off a division championship, but seeing as how we are in the most competitive division in the AFC it'll be a tough one. I'm also rooting for the Browns after seeing last year that they're not too bad right now and they should easily be able to win their division and make the playoffs.

Pats get an easy playoff position to go with being in the weakest division in football, awesome....
Anyway the Colts on the other hand is in one of the toughest divisions and they should make a playoff run.
I'll be happy if the Dolphins do better, Panthers do better, and my team the Saints win the NFC South and atleast make it to the playoffs |

Clevland has made huge strides in the off-season. They've added impact players on defence, and Donte Stallworth gives Anderson another good target. They will be exciting to watch. And should contend for the division this year. Although the Steelers will still make a run at the division crown, you can't underestimate the loss of Pro Bowler Alan Fanaca, so big Ben will continue to get pounded in the pocket. The Steelers also have the toughest strength of schedule in the league this year, which will prove to be tough.
The Patriots however have the easiest schedule in the NFL this year? Go Figure! Although that sked includes 6 games against a weak division, they will still be in a good spot to take the AFC again. Brady's health will play a big factor in their success. And with the loss of Stallworth, you should expect the Pats run game to be utilized a lot more than last year. The Play Action will be significantly better.
Other story lines im looking out for...
Aaron Rodgers, how big the drop off will be?
Can Favre lead the Jets to a Wild Card Spot?
How effective will Shawn Merriman be on one leg?
Who will end up as the Cardinals starter? or will they rotate weekly?
Can Joe Flacco establish himself in Baltimore.
Can Adrian Peterson repeat the year he had last year?
Can Micheal Turner and Matt Ryan help the Falcons make significant strides?
How will the Seahawks depleted WR core affect their offense?
And will the "We get No Respect" Giants shut their critics up??
Huge game tonight! Finally, the NFL is back! WOOOOOO |

From Bill Simmons (Patriots fan, sure, but the ref to Pro Football Prospectus is the part I'm focused on, again, not my words):
"The 2008 Giants were nearly eliminated from the playoffs in Week 14 (here's where every Philly fan says, "David Bleeping Akers!"), survived, kept surviving and eventually won the 2008 Super Bowl as double-digit underdogs. In this year's "Pro Football Prospectus," the boys tried to figure out if the Giants were the most improbable Super Bowl champion ever, creating a Pythagorean formula for expected/actual results that made my nose bleed when I tried to comprehend it. In the end, they determined that the '08 Giants were the luckiest champion ever. Five of their 10 most improbable champions came from this decade. Five!" |
